Children of Alcoholics – Is Alcoholism Inherited?

I got this post around the internet, and i thought i could share it with you guys since i personally learnt alot from it..

Last month, April is National Alcohol Awareness Month—an opportunity to increase public awareness of alcohol abuse and understanding aimed at reducing the stigma that too often prevents individuals and families from seeking help. In today’s blog we hear from David Sack, MD, board certified psychiatrist, addiction physiatrist and addiction medicine, who is the CEO of Promises Treatment Center, a CARF-accredited, dual diagnosis addiction treatment center, in Malibu, Calif.
According to Dr. Sack, “Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive disease that changes the structure and function of the brain, flooding the reward system in the brain with a dopamine (neurotransmitter), that regulates pleasure, teaching people to continue drinking to feel good. Doing this over time can result in physical changes such as a person’s judgment, learning and memory, as well as their ability to stop drinking,” notes Dr. Sack. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) claims that 17.6 million people in the United States suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence. So, what are the effects on children of alcoholics?

Alcohol and Offspring
According to Dr. Sack, children of alcoholics are up to four times more likely to struggle with alcoholism and drug abuse than other kids. Dr. Sacks notes, “They also exhibit more symptoms of depression, anxiety and other emotional and behavioral disorders.” Also, an estimated 50% of children whose parent or parents are alcoholics go on to marry an alcoholic when they are adults.
According to Dr. Sack, genetics account for roughly half of a person’s risk for alcoholism. “This is, at least in part, why people with a family history of addiction are at increased risk for drug or alcohol problems themselves,” notes Dr. Sack.

Dr. Sack stresses that biology is not destiny: “Environment, upbringing and other factors make up the other half of the risk of developing addiction and are, at least to some extent, within our control.” The only sure-fire way to avoid addiction is to abstain from drugs and alcohol.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that excess alcohol consumption can have both short and long term effects on an individual.
Short-term Health Risks of Alcohol
  • Unintentional injuries
  • Violence, including intimate partner violence and child maltreatment
  • Risky sexual behaviors, including unprotected sex and increased risk of sexual assault
  • Miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women
  • Alcohol poisoning
Long-Term Health Risks of Alcohol
  • Dementia
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Suicide
  • Cancer (mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon and breast)
  • Liver disease
How to Help An Addict
“If someone you care about is suffering from alcoholism, chances are the problem isn’t going to solve itself,” notes Dr. Sack. Dr. Sack encourages friends and family to take action:
  • Have a frank conversation with them about the consequences of their drinking (health problems, DUI, lost job, spouse leaving, parenting issues).
  • Point out the connection between these negative consequences and their drinking.
  • Have a plan in mind- complete with a local treatment option
Dr. Sack notes that you may have to have this conversation more than once. “Look for opportunities, especially after a specific consequence occurs due to their alcohol use, to get them talking again.”

Angelina Jolie's aunt dies of breast cancer days after actress' mastectomy op-ed..

Less than two weeks after Angelina Jolie revealed she'd had a double mastectomy to avoid breast cancer, her aunt died from the disease Sunday.

Debbie Martin died at age 61 at a hospital in Escondido, Calif. near San Diego, her husband, Ron Martin, told The Associated Press.

Debbie Martin was the younger sister of Jolie's mother, Marcheline Bertrand, whose own death from ovarian cancer in 2007 inspired the surgery that Jolie described in a May 14 op-ed in the New York Times.

According to her husband, Debbie Martin had the same defective BRCA1 gene that Jolie does, but didn't know it until after her 2004 cancer diagnosis.
"Had we known, we certainly would have done exactly what Angelina did," Ron Martin said in a phone interview.

Debbie Martin's death was first reported by E! News.

Ron Martin said after getting breast cancer, Debbie Martin had her ovaries removed preventively because she was also at very high genetic risk for ovarian cancer, which has killed several women in her family.

The 37-year-old Jolie said in her op-ed that her doctors estimated that she had a 50 percent risk of getting ovarian cancer but an 87 percent risk of breast cancer so she had her breasts removed first, reducing her likelihood to a mere 5 percent.

She described the three-step surgical process in detail in the op-ed "because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience."

The story, a surprise to most save those closest to Jolie, spurred a broad discussion of genetic testing and pre-emptive surgery.

Justin Bieber Reacts to Haters on Stage After Getting Mixed Reactions at Billboard Music Awards

Justin Bieber Reacts to Haters on Stage After Getting Mixed Reactions at Billboard Music Awards
Claps were mixed with boos when Justin Bieber was announced as the winner of fan-voted Milestone Award, a first ever prize at the Billboard Music Awards to honor artist who shows the most musical ingenuity and innovation. Undeterred by the mixed responses, he made it clear to his haters that he felt he deserved the win.

After a few moment of standing on stage in silence while watching the crowd, the Canadian teen idol finally broke his silence saying, "I'm 19 years old, I think I'm doing a pretty good job and basically, from my heart, I really wanna say it should really be about the music. It should be about the craft, the craft that I'm making."

He added, "This is not a gimmick. I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously and all this other bull should not be spoken of. I wanna thank my manager, Scooter Braun. I wanna thank my family at home. I wanna thank my mother, my father, I wanna thank Jesus Christ. Mom, I love you so much. Dad, I love you. Little brother and sister, I love you so much. Thank you guys so much. Fans, you're incredible."

Bieber won the award over such strong contenders as Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift. He was presented the trophy by Cee-Lo Green and a voter who won the contest to be invited to the stage that night. After the booing incident, host Tracy Morgan allegedly reprimanded the crowd, "Don't be booin' nobody, this ain't 'Showtime at the Apollo.' "

Bieber himself focused on the positivity and tweeted a self-empowering message, "2 performances and 2 awards. Grateful to my #Beliebers. Our awards. Love u...I love music, my fans, my family, my friends.. And I love The Lord"

The teen heartthrob won two other coveted gongs at the event, Social Artist of the Year and Male Artist of the Year. He additionally took the stage to perform his single "Take You" and collaborated with will.i.am in "#thatPOWER".

Question for the guys: Why is it harder for men to forgive infidelity?,.

Why is it so difficult and in some cases impossible for you guys to forgive when your woman cheats on you? No matter how much you men love a woman, once she cheats, it's usually over! Why?

You guys cheat all the time and women forgive you. But when it's reversed, you don't forgive. Why? Is it your ego?

Inspirations from Mr. Prime Minister: Tanzanian youths should ‘embrace’ business..

Dodoma. Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda has urged youths in the country to be aggressive and grab opportunities available in different sectors including agriculture, industry, arts and culture.

The Premier told youth at a campaign to promote locally-made products in Dodoma at the weekend that in order to overcome poverty, Tanzanian youth need to embrace entrepreneurship.

Mr Pinda said if the Tanzania labour force, which account to more than 52 per cent of country’s population, majority of whom are youths, engaged themselves in economic activities, the country’s economy will improve in a very short time.

“The main thing is setting up targets and have the desire to attain your targets,” said the Premier.
“Tanzania can proper in a very short time if youths who are majority of Tanzania labour force will use opportunities which are available,” said he.

Mr Pinda was speaking to youths from Dodoma and Dar es Salaam during the campaign to promote local made products held here at the end of the week.

He urged youths to emulate some of entrepreneurs who started with very limited capital and went on to become large scale business personalities.

Mr Pinda said he has been impressed by some graduates who have formed groups with the aim of implementing various economic projects.

The premier also hailed the campaign dubbed ‘made in Tanzania’. According to him if Tanzanians will start to use home made products he was sure that Tanzania industries will prosper.

Jay Dee, Clouds clash ends up in Kinondoni court..

The war of words through social media platforms pitting one of Tanzania’s foremost musicians, Judith Wambura a.k.a. Lady Jay Dee and Clouds Media Group, has landed in a Dar es Salaam court. The songbird was on May 11 summoned by the Kinondoni District Court to appear in person before Resident Magistrate AthumanNyamlani.

Yesterday, Jay Dee was seen at the court putting final touches to essential procedures ahead of the actual legal battle that commences on May 27. However, speaking shortly before she left the court premises, the artiste, who was accompanied by her husband, Times FM radio presenter Gardner Habash, said she was yet to know what charges would be preferred against her.

“I have just received this court document shorty, as of now, I cannot tell which offence they will charge me with. But I was summoned few days ago to appear before this court’’, she said displaying the document.

Her sentiments were echoed by her husband Mr Gardner who said they were heading for further legal procedures with their lawyer and avoided to divulge further into details.

Recently, there have been rifts between Lady Jay Dee and Clouds Media Group managing director, Mr Joseph Kusaga, and the group events and research director Luge Mutahaba, over what the music singer described as total disregard of artists’ rights by the group top bosses.

Even as Jay Dee continue burning midnight oil to face the duo in court on May 27, already, the singer has declared she will be marking 13 years since she embarked on the entertainment sector. The celebration will be held at her famous pub, Nyumbani Lounge.

All the best Jide, I personally love you sooo much!!

Kim Kardashian Worries: Is Kanye West Gay?!?

According to the latest issue of In Touch Weekly, Kim Kardashian has something to worry about aside from her growing weight and the possibility that she is being used for her womb.

KANYE WEST MIGHT BE GAY!!!

Freeing itself from libel, the magazine quotes "some online commenters" as speculating that West is in a "romantic relationship" with Riccardo Tisci, the creative director of the company that designed Kim's dress for this year's MET Gala.

“There are some facts Kim can’t deny,” a source tells In Touch. “Kanye has spent her entire pregnancy living close to Riccardo in the French capita... and Riccardo recently purchased an apartment less than half a mile from Kanye’s in NYC’s Soho neighborhood.”
There it is! Convincing proof!

The tabloid adds that Kanye is "obsessed with Riccardo" and the two spend a lot of time inside Kanye's apartment... if you know what this made-up report means!

“Kim freaked out," a totally real friend says in the article. "If it turns out Kanye is involved with Riccardo, she will be utterly embarrassed - more so than she’s ever been in her life.”

Oooh InTouch magazine, i pray its not true!! Hamna, Kanye can't be GAY!

Dog living on top of Mount Kilimanjaro ..

A dog has been spotted apparently alive and well at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain.

The Kilimanjaro glacier viewed from Uhuru peak. Temperatures on the peak range from minus four to 15 degrees centigrade

The rust-coloured animal was seen by a tourist at Uhuru peak, the mountain's highest summit between 5,730 and 5,895 metres above sea level where temperatures range from minus four to 15 degrees centigrade.

The sighting has baffled animal scientists who have questioned what motivated the dog to scale such heights and how he could have survived without a proper food source on the desert-like, stony plains of the volcanic Tanzanian mountain.

One veterinary expert suggested that the dog might be rabid – one explanation for his mountaineering inclination – are warned other climbers to keep a safe distance.

Antoine le Galloudec, a French tourist, was climbing the mountain with three colleagues and took a picture of the dog using his mobile phone.

In an email to Tanzania's Citizen newspaper, Mr Galloudec said he spotted the dog when he went to answer the call of nature.

"I saw the dog lying one metre away from where I stood on a rock," he said.

Abel Edward, from Ahsante Tours which hosted the group, told The Citizen that a dog was spotted at Baranco Camp (3,960 metres above sea level) on the mountain 10 years ago.

"When the tourists showed us the picture of this dog we could not believe our eyes," he said. "How it survived in such freezing conditions and what it ate during that time remains a mystery to us."

Angelina Jolie reveals she had double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer..

The 37 year old actress and mother of six wrote an article in the New York Times today May 14th revealing she underwent a double mastectomy earlier this year after a blood test showed she was genetically susceptible to cancer. Doctors told her she had an 87% risk of getting breast cancer. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died at the age of 56 after battling with cancer for almost a decade.

Mastectomy is the medical term for the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely.

Angelina Jolie said she went through a series of medical procedures from February till April 2013 to have her breasts removed and then reconstructed. And she says Brad Pitt stood by her side every step of the way.

With Brad Pitt

My mother fought cancer for almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she was.

We often speak of “Mommy’s mommy,” and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.

Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average.

Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.
On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved. During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work.

But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.

My own process began on Feb. 2 with a procedure known as a “nipple delay,” which rules out disease in the breast ducts behind the nipple and draws extra blood flow to the area. This causes some pain and a lot of bruising, but it increases the chance of saving the nipple.

Two weeks later I had the major surgery, where the breast tissue is removed and temporary fillers are put in place. The operation can take eight hours. You wake up with drain tubes and expanders in your breasts. It does feel like a scene out of a science-fiction film. But days after surgery you can be back to a normal life.

Nine weeks later, the final surgery is completed with the reconstruction of the breasts with an implant. There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful.

I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.

I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.

For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options. I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.

I acknowledge that there are many wonderful holistic doctors working on alternatives to surgery. My own regimen will be posted in due course on the Web site of the Pink Lotus Breast Center. I hope that this will be helpful to other women.

Breast cancer alone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. It has got to be a priority to ensure that more women can access gene testing and lifesaving preventive treatment, whatever their means and background, wherever they live. The cost of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2, at more than $3,000 in the United States, remains an obstacle for many women.

I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.

Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of.

A RELATIONSHIP ARTICLE TODAY.

I have read this story before and I think it's definitely worth sharing....please read!

A very loving couple have been married for over 10years without any child and it was becoming their 11th year.
Dave and Clara stayed with each other and greatly hoped that they will have a child before their 11th year of marriage runs out because they were under persuasion from friends and family members to get a divorce but they could'nt let go because of the strong bond of love between them.

Months passed and one day, while Dave was returning from work, he saw his wife walking down the road with a man.

The man had his arms around her neck and they looked very happy. For over a week, he saw the same man with his wife at various places and one evening, while Dave was returning from work he saw the man drop her off at the house after giving her a kiss on the cheek. Dave was angry and sad. Two days later, after a hectic day at work, Dave was taking water with a glass jug from the dispenser when the phone rang. He picked it up and the person said,"Hello dear, I'll be coming to your house this evening to see you as promised. I hope.....". Dave hung-up the phone. It was a male voice and he was sure the person was the man he had always seen her with. He suddenly became shaky with the thought that he has lost his wife to another man.

The glass jug fell from his hand and shattered into pieces. Clara came running into the room asking,"Is everything okay?". In anger he gave his wife a push and she fell. She wasn't moving or getting up. Dave then realized that she fell where he broke the glass jug. A large piece of glass had pierced her. He felt her breath, pulse and heartbeat but there she lay lifeless.
His wife was dead! In total confusion, he saw an envelope in her hand.

He took it, opened it and was shocked by its content -it was a letter. It reads: "My loving husband, words cannot express how I feel so, I had to write it down. I have been going to see a doctor for over a week and I wanted to be sure before I give you the news. The doctor confirmed it that I am
pregnant with a twin and our baby is due 2months from now. The same doctor is my long lost brother whom I lost contact with after our marriage. He has promised to take care of me and our baby and give us the best without collecting a dime. He also promised to have dinner with us today. I am putting this on your favorite hair in the sitting room for you to remember the day you proposed to me and I had to write to you saying,"Yes" because I was so happy.
Thanks for staying by my side".-Your loving wife.

The letter fell from his hand. There was a knock at the door
and the same man he had seen with his wife came in and said, "Hello Dave, I suppose I'm right. Its Max the brother of your wife and......". Suddenly, Max noticed his sister lying in a pool of her blood. He rushed her to the hospital and she was confirmed dead. Her twin baby gone.
