<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Rivers State is known as the land of a thousand masquerades. With a fine variety of spoken tongues, numbering over 300, it is somewhat easy to discern the beauty in the diversity of its peoples. Very many civilizations, ancient and seemingly ageless as they are, quite simply draw attention to the richness and unspeakable eminence of the collective heritage of the Rivers people. Simply put, we are the microcosm of the macrocosm, a Nigeria (with all of its cultural and ethnic diversity) within Nigeria. This, to all intents and purposes, is at the core of the philosophy and guiding principle of CARNIRIV: THE PORT HARCOURT CARNIVAL, scheduled to hold from 15th to 21st November, 2013 with spectacular events. Come and witness nature, tradition and culture at its best...#carniriv2013 #riverscarnival</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">They are comfortable about where they are, and as long as their needs are provided for, they do not see a need to stand up for what they believe in.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This has led to passivity in many leaders today. Instead of fighting tooth and nail for something they believe in, they would settle for less as long as their personal needs were met.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">However, when we look into history, we see that many great leaders like <a href="http://www.leadership-with-you.com/gandhi-leadership.html" target="_blank">Mohandas Gandhi</a>, <a href="http://www.leadership-with-you.com/nelson-mandela-leadership.html" target="_blank">Nelson Mandela</a> and <a href="http://www.leadership-with-you.com/martin-luther-king-junior-leadership.html" target="_blank">Martin Luther King Junior</a> fought boldly for their cause. It did not matter that they were breaking the law; they believed in their cause so strongly that they stood against the government of their time, even to the point of getting jailed at some point.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When we fast forward to our world today, we find that there is a lack of such leaders who are willing to fight tooth and nail for their cause. People learn to settle for their lot in life; as a result, there are many people who suffer in silence.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
<span style="color: #073763; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We don’t need anymore passive leaders; we need bold leaders who are willing to change the world into a better place.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">THE Senate loves itself too much to care about Nigerians. Senators are out to destroy Nigeria with their arrogance and greed. They believe they are above reproach by Nigerians, as they set out to ruin Nigeria today, and its future.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Defences of the intention to make a constitutional provision that would allow girls to be married off when they are five years old – without a prescribed age, they can be married at five months – show the Senate’s ignorance of the possible impacts of the decision.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">We are discussing our country’s future, not the length and width of a bridge that can widened or taken down with minimal consequences. We are dealing with the lives of millions of Nigerians and their right to life as human beings, not commodities for the profane pleasures of some twisted adults. Some female senators voted for child marriage!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Limiting the contest to the rights of the girl child introduces a minimalist approach to the issue. One of the consequences of early marriage is fistula, a condition that leaves a hole between the rectum and the vulva. The woman is incontinent, smells from inability to manage her bowl. In time her husband abandons her in search for his next victim.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">How would a discriminatory Constitution cater for the “welfare of all persons in our country, on the principles of freedom, equality and justice?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The proposed amendment would circumscribe the rights of women, from birth. Our Constitution in Section 42 forbids discrimination on basis of origin, belief, or sex. At what age would a woman retrieve her abrogated rights? Would a girl once married be eligible to vote even if she is 10? Can she stand as guardian and sign legal documents for her children? The girls among them could be married before they are six!</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">How would a society of fistula-ravaged women, who are divorced, abandoned, still in their teens, raise its new members? Exactly what should this law achieve? How would it enhance the liberties our Constitution grants?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Nigerians should contest this matter until it is resolved in their favour. We cannot build a nation on deceit, as has been the case with the Child’s Rights Act (2003) and the Freedom of Information Act (2011). Both laws protect personal liberties the Constitution awards.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The National Assembly watches disinterestedly, as State Houses of Assembly manacle the two laws claiming they are domesticating them. Our Constitution prescribes domestication only for treaties between Nigeria and other countries. According to Section 12 (1) the National Assembly should domesticate treaties for them to have effect. Our Constitution has no provision for State Houses of Assembly to amend federally made laws. It is deceit that permits this illegality.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Section 4 (5) is clear on what State Assemblies cannot do. “If any Law enacted by the House of Assembly of a State is inconsistent with any law validly made by the National Assembly, the law made by the National Assembly shall prevail, and that other Law shall, to the extent of the inconsistency, be void.” Where do the States get their powers?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Each senator swore to this oath, “I, do solemnly swear/affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria; that as a Member of the Senate, I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the law, and the rules of the Senate and always in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well-being and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; that I will strive to preserve the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy contained in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and that I will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria….”</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #444444; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The deceit that is mounted as defence for the abnegation of Nigeria’s future has to be resisted. <b><u><span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Mentoring: A Tool for Youth Empowerment and Employment
Generation<o:p></o:p></span></span></u></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The journey to
building a sustainable society starts with youth development and engagement,
which is being fertilized by mentorship. I will star by defining mentorship and
how it plays a key role youth development and employment generation.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Mentorship, from
Wikipedia definition is a personal developmental relationship in which a more
experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or
less knowledgeable person. In my own words, I will define mentorship as a way
of modeling personal development through practical and experiential coaching by
a more knowledgeable individual. Mentoring, as a dynamic and ever-changing process,
consist of different stages that provide the mentee with the opportunity to
learn and develop. A mentor should be aware that each stage of mentorship is a
key factor to delivering an effective mentorship services. The four major
stages of mentorship are <b><i>Prescriptive, Persuasive, Collaborative and
Confirmative. </i>Prescriptive</b> stage is the first mentoring stage where the
mentee usually has little or no experience in his field of interest. This stage
is most comfortable for latest mentee, who wholly depend on the mentor for
support and direction. This is where the mentor is prescribing, ordering and
advising the mentee and also gives due praise and attention to build the
mentee’s self-confidence. During the
prescribing stage, the mentor will s<i>poon
feed </i>the mentee by providing the mentee every relevant working tools and
sharing of inspiring experience. <b>Persuasive</b>
stage is the second stage in a mentoring program where mentees are challenged
or persuaded to take up new task and do new things. The mentor may suggest new
strategies, coach and push mentees into self-discovery. In the <b>collaborative</b> stage, the mentee is
assumed to have gained enough experience that will aid collaborative activities
between the mentor and mentee. The mentor at this point will work jointly with
the mentee to achieve a professional or personal goal since the mentee must
have gained some relevant knowledge around the field. <b>Confirmative</b> stage is suitable for mentees with a lot of experience
who have mastered the job competencies and is ready to deliver while the mentor
just supervises.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For youth
development, I cannot over emphasis the relevance of youth actions in building
a sustainable society. Looking at youth being the most active group in the
society, one can say that they are inevitable and must be duly considered in
planning a productive society. One of the best ways of engaging and developing
young people is through mentoring program. Focusing on youth development, we
must keep in mind certain essential competencies that youth must develop in
order to make the relevant in the society. Some of these skills and
competencies are Leadership skills, Proactive learning, Entrepreneurial
outlook, Global mindset and Emotional intelligence. These skills and
competencies are building block to developing a young socially responsible
individual. Mentorship program is an important aspect of youths’ learning
environment which can effectively guide youths to acquire such skills and
competencies within a short time.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Mentoring uses a
direct impact process in mentor-mentee relationship because the mentee will
have the opportunity to develop any skill or competency that the mentor
disposes either by experiential or coaching process. Effective mentorship
program affects the key developmental process of an individual; social knowledge,
religion, academics, career choice and decision making. When an individual is
engaged in a mentoring program, all the above mentioned attributes of the
individual is being addressed and affected by the mentor’s coaching. The mentee
is undergoing an experiential
developmental programs by the mentor using different working training
strategies to ensure that the mentee gains the required skills and knowledge to
complete the developmental cycle of an individual.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In the sense of
youth development, mentorship is designed to aid youths in acquiring
exceptional competencies and practical experiences through different mentoring
processes. Mentorship can come from Youth Organizations, peer groups, Teachers,
Parents, Religious heads and significant personalities.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Employment
generation is an end product of two factors; Skills and Competencies. Looking
at our environment critically, it is obvious that youths lack these key
projectors of employment generation. For an individual to be employable one
must develop certain skills and generating employment requires so much
competencies that will act as supporting tool in driving ideas and increasing
youth productivity. Employment generation boils down to applying
entrepreneurial competencies and that is one important competency that youths
must develop to generate employment or be employable. These are focus areas
that mentorship tends to deliver these competencies to their mentees.
Mentorship program covers skills and competency building so it plays a
significant role in youth productivity level. Employment generation is
dependent on career choice which is a determinant of mentorship. Mentorship
program is an interactive tool to building career choice and practical
experience in the field of interest and it has its unique way of building
self-confidence because the mentee will be guided through his career path by a
mentor and will be given relevant feedbacks from the mentor.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Youth
development is directly proportional to employment generation since youths play
a key role in socio-economic development of any society. Mentorship is one of
the best strategies of developing an individual irrespective of social or
religious background that will be able to drive positive growth in the society.
While everyone can benefit from a mentor at every point, it is essential to
understand that the ultimate goal of implementing a mentoring program is to
produce a well-grounded, competent employee who outgrows the tutelage of a
mentor. At the end of any mentoring program, the mentee should evolve to the
point of acquiring self-motivation, confidence and general social growth.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The Dungeon Dragon first released his Pharrell-produced island thump last month, and Thursday night, he gave the track new life by adding the queen of Queens, New York. This time out, rather than employing her alter-ego Roman or her sometimes London accent, Nicki leans on her West Indian roots and lets loose a deep Patois. "Dutty gal, when ya see mi and what yu fi do/ Bow down, big chain and it heavy too," she raps in a slow and measured pace.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Keeping with the vibe, Nicki goes on to shout out dancehall influencers like Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer, before repping for her birthplace, spitting: "Trinidad an no Jame$ mi no chat 'bout."</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Busta Rhymes, who is Jamaican-American, has always dabbled in reggae. On his 2009 album, <i>Back On My B.S.,</i> he and Pharrell created a similar vibe with <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or9KPggol1g" style="color: #00bce4; text-decoration: none;">"Kill Dem."</a></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This isn't the first time Nicki has embraced dancehall, either. Back in 2010, she hopped on a remix of Jamaican reggae singer <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oz-u6I9bbSQ" style="color: #00bce4; text-decoration: none;">Gyptian's hit "Hold You,"</a> and earlier this year, she contributed to French Montana's Lil Vicious-sampling single <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1703244/french-montana-nicki-minaj-freaks-video.jhtml" style="color: #00bce4; text-decoration: none;">"Freaks."</a> Though Montana's single is technically a rap song, Nicki's verse was drenched with island slang. <i><b><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I have found a new lover; he is the man of my dreams</span></span></b></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">
He delights in the beauty of the creation in me, the
wonderful bones that have been perfected and configured to carry the weight I
bear. He loves me beyond the word love and is ready to go to the depth and
heights to see me smile and not just for a while but a while longer</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">
He finds satisfaction in the pouring of sweet words from his
lover’s mouth, and in the glow of the beautiful skin that radiates its light to
the world. His gratification rises with a beautiful scent of the heart’s
innermost peace. <span> </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span> </span></span></div>

<i><b>I have found a new lover; he is the man of my dreams</b></i></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">
I believe in him, his dreams, and mission for me. He makes
me cross mountains and wide rivers so I can see his vision for me and he cares
a little too much forcing my heart to give more of me. He looks deep in my eyes
and I can sense that all he sees is the beautiful version of me and the amazing
being he wants me to be; with him </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">
Pure happiness filled my heart as my life is engraved in his
and together, we live day to day. Doubts and worries overwhelmed my heart when
I thought about tomorrow and my insecurity caused me to be blind of the joys of
today.<span> </span>As the sun set, he said “I am not
certain that tomorrow will come but you should know that tomorrow is a metaphor
because with our souls intertwined; we have lived together a thousand tomorrows
full of love and pleasures of the world.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: small;">
He gave life
back to me and my bones danced with joy leaving behind sadness of the world and
embracing the madness of the heart in love, love that cannot be altered, in its
purest form it shines beyond coloured petals in the morning sun and its levels
are all positive never less than one. He listens to my cry and hugs me all
night long saying it is going to be okay and he makes my life easier, even with
the less that I own, I am under no stress like a new born</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: small;">
He is the
definition of love that I have been looking for. He makes me a free soul, fully
liberated from a prison in the chambers of my heart.<span> </span>The agony of the world was ready to swallow
me when he appeared and his gentle hands were around me. He is the perfect fire
that purifies the innermost parts of my fascinating body, With Him I am refined
and made a new. He is the flower that blossom in autumn and light in a dark
night.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Imagine that you are in an elevator. It stops to
pick up the next passenger going up. It turns out to be H.E. Jayaka
Mrisho Kikwete, yes, the President of Tanzania himself, accompanied by a group
of high anking officials. The President turns and asks you what you think
is the most important thing that he could do for his country. You have less
than three minutes to convince him. What would you tell him?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">I know
what I would say, loud and clear: “Your Excellency, that would have to be
improving the performance of the port of Dar es Salaam.”</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">No doubt
there are plenty of issues that matter for Tanzania’s prosperity: rural
development, education, energy, water, food security, roads, you name it. They
are all competing for urgent attention and effort; yet it is also true that
each of them involves complex solutions that would take time to produce impact
on the ground, and it is hard to know where to begin and to focus priority
attention.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">This is
not the case for the Dar es Salaam port, as most experts know what to do.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">So why
the port of Dar es Salaam?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">The port
represents a wonderful opportunity for his country. The port handles about 90%
of Tanzania’s international trade and is the potential gateway of six
landlocked countries. I would tell him that almost all citizen and firms
operating in Tanzania are currently affected, directly and indirectly, by the
performance of this port.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">When
children are desperately ill in hospitals, the medicines that they urgently
need to cure them are likely to be stuck inside the port. When farmers are
keeling over due to excessive prices for fertilizers, this is partly as a
result of the long delays at the port. Not only are the vehicles that transport
us and our goods delivered to us as sea freight, they are also fuelled
gasoline/petrol brought in by tankers from abroad. Come to think of it, a large
portion of what Tanzanians eat, drink, or use in a typical day came into the
country through the port of Dar es Salaam at some stage, either during its
production or in its final state.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">I would
emphasize the symptoms of the current poor performance of the port.
Delays in processes are generally long, very long. In mid-2012 for instance, a
typical container spent an average of 20 days in the port, including the
anchorage time and the time spent before the merchandise exited the premises.
In Mombasa port, the same container would spend an average of four to six days,
or two to three days in the world's most efficient ports.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Although
this average delay masks huge variations across customers and products, it
translates into significant monetary costs for shipping companies and importers
that are generally passed on to local consumers. To illustrate the magnitude of
these losses for his country and the region, the World Bank's Third Tanzania
Economic Update has calculated that Tanzania and six neighboring countries
could earn up to US$2.7 billion per year (or approximately seven percent of
Tanzania's GDP) if only the performance of the Dar es Salaam port was at par
with Mombasa’s.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">At this
stage, the President might ask what exactly he should do to improve the port's
performance. The good news is that many experts involved already have an idea
what to do. They have proposed to improve both the soft and hard infrastructure
in and around the port. On the soft side, this means rationalizing current
processes and procedures that are overly complex and end up penalizing users.
For example, modifying the sequencing call of vessels and storage tariffs, as
well as simplifying custom payments.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">For hard
infrastructure, equipment, such as cranes, needs to be modernized and new
berths built to increase capacity. These well-known actions have been
identified for a while now but have not yet been implemented or only at a
half-hearted pace.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Leadership
for Reforms<br />
<br />
“Well,” Ndugu Kikwete might say, “if my country is losing so much money and
experts know what to do, what can I do to speed up the implementation process?”
My answer would be three-fold. Firstly, some of the actions require money but I
would quickly explain to him that this is not the main reason for the
resistance to reforms. Indeed, many actions are inexpensive and others can be
funded by private operators. Ports are good businesses, including in Tanzania,
and potential private investors have been queuing to invest in the port of Dar
es Salaam.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Secondly,
I would explain to him that the lack of progress in the implementation of
efficiency enhancing reforms in the port is partly the consequence of the
absence of information about the cost of inaction. Not many people are aware
that a more efficient port could boost the Tanzanian and regional economies, at
least not in the magnitude of the figures mentioned above.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Thirdly,
and more importantly, I would point out that he would have to fight the vested
interests that are gaining from the inefficient state of the port.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">The port
is handling about US$15 billion of merchandise and this amount is expected to
grow as the result of the expansion of regional economies. What is the
corruption rate on these transactions? Of course, it is difficult to capture in
exact terms, but if the corruption rate is, say, 20% of the value of the traded
merchandise, this will be equivalent to US$3 billion per year!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Long
delays also provide an opportunity for connected users to speed up processes
through illegal payments. Such opportunistic behavior would not exist with an
efficient port since there would be less room for negotiation. Why would users
pay extra-money if the average delay in the port was only four days?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Another
group winning from the port inefficiency is constituted by domestic companies
that are facing less competition from imports. Longer delays of the imports
contribute to higher costs and translate into some sort of ‘protection’ for the
associated local industries. This protection could be as high as 22% of the merchandise's
value if it is imported by container. This is four times higher than the
average official import tariff charged by customs. Thanks to this protection,
domestic firms can increase their profits or have less incentive to produce the
most efficient way possible. As a result, the final consumer or investor loses,
either by paying too much or accepting low quality. The trade-off is of course
that faced with tougher competition someday some local firms could lose jobs or
disappear.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">My
three-minutes are gone...</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">At the
end of my three minutes, to convince the President further, I would conclude by
telling him that he should not forget the "three Cs". The reform
process in the port of Dar es Salaam requires:</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">- More
Competition - by bringing new private investors in the port to finance new
investments and offer better quality services;</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><br />
- Less Corruption - by reducing the opportunities for rent-seeking behaviors by
specific groups, and;</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><br />
- More Communication by launching a strong advocacy campaign, which will help
stimulate the appetite for reforms and increase the accountability of policy
makers.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Thank
you, Mr. President.</span></div>

I got this post around the internet, and i thought i could share it with you guys since i personally learnt alot from it..<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
<i>Last month, April is National
Alcohol Awareness Month—an opportunity to increase public awareness of
alcohol abuse and understanding aimed at reducing the stigma that too
often prevents individuals and families from seeking help. In today’s
blog we hear from David Sack, MD, board certified psychiatrist,
addiction physiatrist and addiction medicine, who is the CEO of </i><a href="http://www.promises.com/">Promises Treatment Center</a>, a CARF-accredited, dual diagnosis addiction treatment center, in Malibu, Calif.</div>
According to Dr. Sack, “Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive disease
that changes the structure and function of the brain, flooding the
reward system in the brain with a dopamine (neurotransmitter), that
regulates pleasure, teaching people to continue drinking to feel good.
Doing this over time can result in physical changes such as a person’s
judgment, learning and memory, as well as their ability to stop
drinking,” notes Dr. Sack. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug
Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) claims that 17.6 million people in the United
States suffer from <a href="https://www.itriagehealth.com/conditions/alcoholism-25">alcohol abuse or dependence</a>. So, what are the effects on children of alcoholics?<br />
<br />
<b>Alcohol and Offspring</b><br />
According to Dr. Sack, children of alcoholics are up to four times
more likely to struggle with alcoholism and drug abuse than other kids.
Dr. Sacks notes, “They also exhibit more symptoms of depression, anxiety
and other emotional and behavioral disorders.” Also, an estimated 50%
of children whose parent or parents are alcoholics go on to marry an
alcoholic when they are adults.<br />
According to Dr. Sack, genetics account for roughly half of a
person’s risk for alcoholism. “This is, at least in part, why people
with a family history of addiction are at increased risk for drug or
alcohol problems themselves,” notes Dr. Sack.<br />
<br />
Dr. Sack stresses that biology is not destiny: “Environment,
upbringing and other factors make up the other half of the risk of
developing addiction and are, at least to some extent, within our
control.” The only sure-fire way to avoid addiction is to abstain from
drugs and alcohol.<br />
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that
excess alcohol consumption can have both short and long term effects on
an individual.<br />
<b>Short-term Health Risks of Alcohol</b><br />
<ul>
<li>Unintentional injuries</li>
<li>Violence, including intimate partner violence and child maltreatment</li>
<li>Risky sexual behaviors, including unprotected sex and increased risk of sexual assault</li>
<li>Miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women</li>
<li>Alcohol poisoning</li>
</ul>
<b>Long-Term Health Risks of Alcohol</b><br />
<ul>
<li>Dementia</li>
<li>Cardiovascular problems</li>
<li><a href="https://www.itriagehealth.com/conditions/substance-abuse-737">Depression</a></li>
<li>Anxiety</li>
<li>Suicide</li>
<li>Cancer (mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon and breast)</li>
<li>Liver disease</li>
</ul>
<b>How to Help An Addict</b><br />
“If someone you care about is suffering from alcoholism, chances are
the problem isn’t going to solve itself,” notes Dr. Sack. Dr. Sack
encourages friends and family to take action:<br />
<ul>
<li>Have a frank conversation with them about the consequences of their
drinking (health problems, DUI, lost job, spouse leaving, parenting
issues).</li>
<li>Point out the connection between these negative consequences and their drinking.</li>
<li>Have a plan in mind- complete with a local treatment option</li>
</ul>
Dr. Sack notes that you may have to have this conversation more than
once. “Look for opportunities, especially after a specific consequence
occurs due to their alcohol use, to get them talking again.”<br />

<span style="font-size: small;"><span class="dateline">LOS ANGELES – </span>Less than two weeks after
Angelina Jolie revealed she'd had a double mastectomy to avoid breast
cancer, her aunt died from the disease Sunday.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;">Debbie Martin died at age 61 at a hospital in Escondido, Calif. near
San Diego, her husband, Ron Martin, told The Associated Press.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Debbie Martin was the younger sister of Jolie's mother, Marcheline
Bertrand, whose own death from ovarian cancer in 2007 inspired the
surgery that Jolie described in a May 14 op-ed in the New York Times.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">According to her husband, Debbie Martin had the same defective BRCA1
gene that Jolie does, but didn't know it until after her 2004 cancer
diagnosis.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">"Had we known, we certainly would have done exactly what Angelina did," Ron Martin said in a phone interview.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Debbie Martin's death was first reported by E! News.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Ron Martin said after getting breast cancer, Debbie Martin had her
ovaries removed preventively because she was also at very high genetic
risk for ovarian cancer, which has killed several women in her family.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">The 37-year-old Jolie said in her op-ed that her doctors estimated
that she had a 50 percent risk of getting ovarian cancer but an 87
percent risk of breast cancer so she had her breasts removed first,
reducing her likelihood to a mere 5 percent.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">She described the three-step surgical process in detail in the op-ed
"because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience."</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-size: small;">The story, a surprise to most save those closest to Jolie, spurred a
broad discussion of genetic testing and pre-emptive surgery.</span></div>

Undeterred by the mixed responses, he made it clear to his haters that he felt he deserved the win.<br /><br />After a few moment of standing on stage in silence while watching the crowd, the Canadian teen idol finally broke his silence saying, "I'm 19 years old, I think I'm doing a pretty good job and basically, from my heart, I really wanna say it should really be about the music. It should be about the craft, the craft that I'm making."<br /><br />He added, "This is not a gimmick. I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously and all this other bull should not be spoken of. The songbird was on May 11 summoned by the Kinondoni District Court to appear in person before Resident Magistrate AthumanNyamlani.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Yesterday, Jay Dee was seen at the court putting final touches to essential procedures ahead of the actual legal battle that commences on May 27. However, speaking shortly before she left the court premises, the artiste, who was accompanied by her husband, Times FM radio presenter Gardner Habash, said she was yet to know what charges would be preferred against her.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Recently, there have been rifts between Lady Jay Dee and Clouds Media Group managing director, Mr Joseph Kusaga, and the group events and research director Luge Mutahaba, over what the music singer described as total disregard of artists’ rights by the group top bosses.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Even as Jay Dee continue burning midnight oil to face the duo in court on May 27, already, the singer has declared she will be marking 13 years since she embarked on the entertainment sector. The celebration will be held at her famous pub, Nyumbani Lounge.</span><br />
